Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger (or measuring tool)
  • Two cocktail glasses
  • Small plate for the sugar rim
  • Citrus juicer

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces whiskey — I used Crown Royal
  • 1 ounce blackberry liqueur such as Chambord
  • ½ ounce blue curacao
  • ½ ounce maple syrup
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 ounces Sprite 7-Up, or another lemon-lime soda, or to taste
  • 2 maraschino cherries for garnish
  • Black sugar for rimming the glasses
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

Rim the glasses

  • Pour black sugar onto a small plate. Moisten the glass rims with a lemon wedge, then dip them into the sugar. Set the glasses aside.

Add the cocktail ingredients

  • Add whiskey, blue curacao, blackberry liqueur, maple syrup, lemon juice, and ice to a cocktail shaker.

Shake

  • Shake firmly for about 10–15 seconds until the mixture is well chilled.

Pour

  • Strain the mixture evenly between the two prepared glasses filled with fresh ice.

Add the fizz

  • Top each glass with lemon-lime soda. Give each cocktail a very gentle stir.

Garnish

  • Add a maraschino cherry to each glass and serve immediately.

Notes

  • I used Crown Royal, but you can substitute bourbon, rye, or another smooth whiskey.
  • Adjust the maple syrup depending on how sweet your blackberry liqueur is.
  • Fresh lemon juice gives the best flavor.
  • Use chilled lemon-lime soda for a colder, more refreshing drink.
  • Add the soda after shaking.
  • Black sugar is optional but gives the drink its spooky appearance.
  • For a stronger blackberry flavor, slightly increase the blackberry liqueur.
  • For a tarter whiskey sour, add a little more fresh lemon juice.
  • For a sweeter cocktail, add a little extra maple syrup.
  • Double or triple the ingredients when serving a larger Halloween gathering.
