Equipment

  • 1 heatproof mug (10–12 ounces)
  • Small kettle or saucepan
  • Measuring jigger or measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small spoon or cocktail spoon
  • Small whisk or milk frother (optional)
  • Microplane or fine grater for fresh nutmeg

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces gold rum
  • 1 tablespoon hot buttered rum batter
  • 1.5 ounces dark rum
  • 2 ounces hot water
  • 1 splash pure vanilla extract
  • 1 dash ground cinnamon
  • 1 dash ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • Freshly grated nutmeg for garnish
  • 1 cinnamon stick for garnish

Instructions

Warm your mug

  • Fill your mug with hot water for a minute. Empty it before making the cocktail. This helps keep the finished drink warm for longer.

Add the buttered rum batter

  • Place 1 tablespoon of hot buttered rum batter into the warm mug.

Pour in the rum

  • Add the gold rum and dark rum. Give everything a gentle stir.

Add the spices

  • Add the vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a small pinch of salt.

Pour in hot water

  • Add 2–3 ounces of hot water. Start with 2 ounces, then add more if you prefer a lighter drink.

Mix until smooth

  • Stir well until the buttered rum batter melts completely and combines with the rum and water. You can use a small whisk or milk frother if you want a smoother finish.

Garnish and serve

  • Finish with freshly grated nutmeg and a cinnamon stick. Serve immediately while the cocktail is warm.

Notes

  • This recipe uses both gold and dark rum for a richer flavor.
  • The listed 3.5 ounces of rum makes a strong cocktail. Reduce the total rum to 1.5–2 ounces for a milder serving.
  • Start with 2 ounces of hot water and add more if needed.
  • Use softened, buttered rum batter so it melts smoothly.
  • A small pinch of salt helps balance the sweetness.
  • Freshly grated nutmeg makes a lovely garnish.
  • Stir thoroughly before drinking because the butter can separate.
  • Serve immediately while warm.
  • For the best flavor, use a heatproof mug and good-quality rum.
