Ingredients

  • 3 large Granny Smith apples cored and chopped into bite-sized chunks
  • Juice of 1 lemon about 3 tbsp
  • Ice for serving
  • 2 blood oranges sliced into thin rounds (keep peel on for color!)
  • 1 cup blackberries
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • ½ cup pomegranate juice unsweetened preferred
  • 1 750-mL bottle light red wine (Grenache, Gamay, or Pinot Noir work great)
  • 3 cups Italian soda blood orange, orange, or pomegranate flavor
  • 3 oz créme de cassis blackcurrant liqueur — adds that “black magic” depth
  • oz simple syrup or to taste — adjust for sweetness
  • Sprite or Coca-Cola for topping off each glass — adds fizz & fun
  • 2 regular oranges sliced into rounds (for garnish)
  • 1 cinnamon stick for that witchy aroma
  • ¼ cup brandy optional but recommended for warmth
  • 1 can 12 oz ginger ale (for extra bubbles at the end)
  • Colored sugar black, orange, purple — for rimming glasses, optional but festive!

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Fruit

  • Core and chop the Granny Smith apples into small cubes — no need to peel. Toss them in a bowl with the lemon juice. This keeps them from browning and adds a nice zing.
  • Slice the blood oranges and regular oranges into thin rounds. Set aside a few for garnish.

Step 2: Build the Sangria Base: In your large pitcher, combine:

  • Chopped apples (with lemon juice)
  • Blackberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blood orange slices
  • Pomegranate juice
  • Red wine
  • Créme de cassis
  • Simple syrup
  • Brandy (if using)
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Give it a gentle stir with a wooden spoon. Don’t mash the fruit — we want pretty slices floating later.

Step 3: Chill It Out

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours — or better yet, overnight. The longer it sits, the more the flavors marry. I like to make this the day before my party. It gets better with time.

Step 4: Add the Fizz

  • Right before serving, stir in the Italian soda and ginger ale. This keeps the bubbles alive. If you add them too early, they’ll go flat.

Step 5: Serve It Spooky

  • Rim glasses with colored sugar if you’re feeling festive (wet rim with lemon juice, dip in sugar).
  • Fill glasses with ice, pour in the sangria (get some fruit in each glass!), and top with a splash of Sprite or Coke for extra fizz and sweetness.

Notes

  • Chill time is key for best flavor.
  • Always add the soda right before serving to keep the fizz.
  • Colored sugar rims make the presentation extra fun.
